Your email

You are actually relying on a company for your everyday email communications, although this service is usually free do not forget that the main focus of companies offering free emails is to make money. Making money by offering free services is something quite sensitive/difficult therefore you could be worry about confidentiality and availability of such an email address over time. What will happen if, one day, yahoo or google decide to stop offering you email-based services ? Although it is very unlikely there is nothing stopping them from doing that. Same problem if you decide to leave your email provider, you will not be able to keep your email address.

The idea of gerthoffer(t) domains is very simple, offer email capabilities to members of the family. Three kind of email addresses are available:

• Email redirection: an automated redirection is created, pointing to your real address. For example every email received at johannes@gerthoffer.info is automatically redirected to johannes.gerthoffer@gmail.com (or any other email address). With this solution you can communicate a much nicier email address to your contact. The only drawback of this solution is that if you reply to an email from your webmail your real email address will be displayed.
• Email alias: if you provider has such functionalities (gmail for example) you can use an email redirection to send and receive emails while keeping your existing email.
• Email hosting: you can host your emails gerthoffer(t).info, it will give you 2Go of email space with webmail, pop3, imap access.

Cautions

Be careful with this new email address.  Do not publish it on websites or use is to subscribe to web services, keep in mind that this email address could be available for life therfore you can be sure that you do not want to get spammed. If necessary we can create some dedicated aliases pointing to your real email address, therefore when you start receiving to much spam you can simply delete the redirection and create a new one.

Also keep future in mind, right now when you want to give a call to a friend you are using some number but it is very likely that whithin the next few years you will stop using numbers and start using unique ID (for phone, websites, messenger, …) and it is likely that this ID will be your email address.

Companies are already experiencing such capabilities.

Get an email redirection

Just send me an email with your real email address and the address you would like to get on the @gerthoffer(t) domain (subject to availability). Your email redirection will be created as soon as possible.

Create an email Alias (gmail)

This process is very similar to web redirections. To make it simple we will first create a redirection to your existing email address, then you will communicate this redirection to your email provider. Your email provide will send a confirmation email to this email address and everything is fine you will be able to start using your alias as your email address.

You may be wondering how this is possible, simple consider that there is no veryfication of the sender when you send an email, therefore it is very easy to use any sender in your email. The only draw back is that if you present yourself as bill.gates@microsoft.com you will not be able to receive any reply from the user. Instead Bill Gates will.

I’m using an email alias for all my communications without any issues.

Just send me an email with your real email address and the address you would like to get on the @gerthoffer(t) domain (subject to availability). Your email redirection will be created as soon as possible.

Once this is done just open your gmail account and go into  “Settings > Accounts”, and follow the procedures in the  “Send email as” section.
